Running Low on STEAM? We Can Help

Posted 10/24/2019 in

Yikes… Using bad puns in blog posts already. Sorry, guys.

STEAM actually stands for “Science and Theology for Emerging Adult Ministries.” Maybe you actually are running low on science and theology in your church or para-church ministry groups for young adults. Well, you’ve come to the right place.

The STEAM Project was the product of our partnership with Greg Cootsona. Greg is a science history scholar who spent decades as a practicing pastor in urban contexts. This combo developed a passion in him about about resourcing other ministers with tools to help them cultivate open and integrated dialogue in their contexts.

STEAM solicited project proposals from church and para-church groups all over North America, eventually selecting 29 groups to fund and resource. These projects were very diverse, speaking to the creativity of each project leader in meeting the felt needs of their immediate context. We were able to help each of them by networking the leaders with one another (through 2 conference events), and offering mentorship and funds.

In addition to nurturing sub-projects around the country, STEAM enabled Greg to write a very accessible book, Mere Science and Christian Faith, published by InterVarsity Press in 2018. The content from this book has also been turned into an online course, now available through Fuller Formation (subscription).

Another incredible resource that grew from The STEAM Project, was the ability to build a sustainable ongoing newsletter under the name Science for Congregations. Signing up will allow you to receive free, thoughtful resources to your inbox every week.

We’ll be introducing you to some of the other great outputs of The STEAM Project in other blog posts, but to get you started, check out some of the compelling talks from one of our teams at Blackhawk Church in Middleton, WI!
