1992: Riots, Uprising, or Rebellion?

As we commemorate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we remember that our heritage as Asian Americans includes physical struggle and marginalization, from purge-like Chinatown lynchings in the late 1800s through Japanese Incarceration and the 1992 LA Uprising.

During those 1992 riots, in the wake of the decision to find LAPD officers innocent of wrongdoing for the beating of Rodney King, law enforcement withdrew from Koreatown and South Central. Those neighborhoods – filled with Asian and Black Americans – were left to burn as a perimeter was established around wealthier (and Whiter) neighborhoods.
